ninjas/cyclists celebrating survival with juice from the garden, looking like squinty muppets

Single speed bikes are the new skinny jeans, only super cool as opposed to super uncomfortable. They’re making an urban come back, developed from velodrome cycling to urban posties, and now to the rest of us.
Group rides in the weekends! Cycling can be a great way to meet people, and i’ve found other cyclists to be really friendly i.e. waving or nodding as they usually pass me pretty fast (im not about speed, im enjoying the journey!). There are also great adventures to be had, rail-trail cycle rack, le race (Chch to Akaroa), grape ride (round Blenheim), Lake Taupo cycle challenge, Rainbow rage (Hanmer) etc
It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.
~Ernest Hemingway
Cons:
The reality of biking amongst traffic can be pretty scary. This is something i am working on. Its really important to bike predictably for traffic, its safer to assume that cars havnt seen you.
The mountain bike
The secret to mountain biking is pretty simple. The slower you go the more likely it is you’ll crash.
I’ve not got into mountain biking yet, although my partner Dave got his old one all tuned up yesterday so it may well be on the cards! It looks super fun, not great for commuting unless you live in the mountains!

The road/ racing bike

~Mark Twain, ‘Taming the Bicycle’
Still on the transport theme, but realising life has so many facets that I’m going to have to move slightly quicker if I expect to cover even the smallest faction of these before Copenhagen, so I’m working through bicycles today. All of them.
Bicycles are such a great option, perhaps the greatest invention of all time, and with so many and varied alternatives, a person has the luxury of picking the bicycle that best reflects them…
The extremely civilized lady’s bicycle:
My beautiful bike is a 1960s Triumph, done up with a flashy new bell, basket, handle-grips, paint job, white-rim tyres, and most importantly a new seat! Granted my own rear-end natural cushioning makes for a pretty good ride, even the most padded of bums will appreciate the pure luxury of a new bike seat.

Cycling up and down the driveway, otherwise always wear a helmet! brains are too important not to protect.
Tips:
search trade-me for second hand bicycles, or ask neighbours particularly those with well-stocked garages. Most people hold onto old bikes for sentimental reasons, and would be happy to hand it over knowing it is going to be done up lovingly.
safety first! check that brakes, wheel rims, chains and any gears are complete, free from rust and lubricated.
replace any essentials as necessary i.e. tyres
check out trade-me, garage sales or perhaps just around the house for boxes or baskets that can be attached for handy storage
I use my Triumph for…
Trips to the butchers at Redcliffs (to be discussed later in relation to what we eat, and where its from)
Taking the Charlie dog for run. It would be totally ridiculous for me to try and run alongside my big black lab.
Small trips around Sumner village i.e. to friends places, videoshop, the weekend market
Occasionally venturing out further in the Port Hills, but any trips much further then I borrow the road bike
The extremely uncivilized group bike-powered bar
Saw this in Amsterdam, not sure New Zealand law would allow this…
The road/ racing bike

sweet single speed bike
Pros:
The more you use it, the fitter you become. How incredible! It’s a gym membership and method of transportation all-in-one! So really, when you’re measuring time efficiency, you have to calculate the trip in comparison to a car in traffic (perhaps 10 min longer by bike in my case), but then overall that’s 50 min I can take off being at the gym. Winner! Gym sessions that would take 55min (3 times a week), now take a total of 5 min, brilliant. Count me in for anything that means less gym techno in my life.

The extremely uncivilized group bike-powered bar

Get a bicycle. You will not regret it, if you live.

2007 Norge 1200 Moto Guzzi, That's Amore

One of my favorite writers, Susan Carpenter, the "throttle jockey" who writes for the LA Times, has delivered a review of the 2007 Norge 1200 Moto Guzzi sport-tourer motorcycle that might have you running to your dealer with dollars in your pocket. The Italian luxury bike is named as a tribute to the 3,700-mile trip Giuseppi Guzzi took to the Arctic Circle almost 80 years ago. It has a powerful air-cooled, four-stroke, 90-degree V twin engine and at 542 pounds is a substantial and sturdy bike. Carpenter took the bike for a spin in Malibu's Decker Canyon and found it a breeze on the twisting roads. The base price is $14,990.

Recycled Bike Coffee Table

I have to say, I would not have guessed "bicycle" if asked what this coffee table used to be in a former life. I can kind of see it in the cogs and the reshaped rims, but the rolled inner tubes for feet and some other features are well disguised. This Recycled Bike Coffee Table by Resource Revival is definitely unique and brings a whole new meaning to the idea of recycling with it's elegant though industrial appearance. It's hard to imagine that it used to be an old used-up form of transportation for somebody -- welcome back little bike! Specializing in using old bicycle parts to create functional works of art, Resource Revival makes its creations by hand in Mosier, Oregon. Also worth checking out from them is this Recycled Bike Cafe Table.

The Brightest (and Most Expensive?) Bike Light Ever

I love the outdoors, so it's always a bit of a bummer when this time of year swings around and it starts getting darker earlier. For you bikers out there who find yourself pedaling in the dusk and the dark this is something you might want to check out: the Betty, by Lupine Lighting Systems. It's made to attach to your bike or your helmet (or wherever) and it's the brightest (and possibly most expensive) bike light ever made. The Betty is so bright, in fact, that if you pedal too slowly or stop completely it will start dimming itself automatically because it needs your self-generated wind to keep from overheating. Nice motivation to keep pushing yourself! Made of seven LEDs, the Betty bike light is about as bright as a car's headlights (watch out for deer!). $1185Filed under: Gadgets

Mercedes-Benz is launching a new emissions-free way to travel: the Folding Bike. The leather-covered trunk is available in a variety of colors and has nickeled brass handles. It sells for $12,000 from Vivre.

MV Agusta Limited Edition Hydrogen and Wally Bikes

It's always interesting when companies collaborate, and it's no different in the case of Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta joining forces with both the clothing manufacturer Hydrogen and the luxury boat company Wally. The resulting limited edition bikes are spin-offs of MV Agusta's Brutale 910 and are appropriately called the Hydrogen Brutale 910 R and the Wally Brutale 910 R. Each of the bike designs are unique while still maintaining the lines and beauty that make the Brutale the bike that it is. Only 100 of each model will be produced

Titanium Tricycle is Indestructable

Kids are notoriously rough on their toys and sometimes it's worth it to spend a little extra to get something that can stand up to the abuse. Outdoor toys like bikes not only take a beating from your kids but from the weather also, which is why some parents might opt to splurge on this titanium tricycle. Not only does it have a nearly indestructible and rust-proof titanium frame, but it also looks classy with its carbon seat and white leather saddle, plus bright white wheel rims.Although I still prefer the traditional red tricycle this one does look pretty snazzy. $2,500

$30,000 Customized KGS Bikes

With the environment to think about, and our wallets also due to ever-growing transportation costs, investing in a well-made custom bicycle is sounding a lot more appealing to many people than it did just a few years ago. Now whether you can justify forking over as much for a bike as you would for a car is another story, but for some having a customized two-wheeled ride is worth it. KGS Bikes has a special fitting process that makes their bikes customized to fit each individual buyer, and meet their unique needs. The prices range from $8,000 - $32,000, with the highest price point buying you a "one-off work of rolling art." v

Swarovski-Studded Golden Bicycle

Aurumania has a mission to turn ordinary objects into sparkling, golden collectibles, and this Swarovski-studded gold-plated bicycle is a perfect example of that mission. Each Crystal Edition Gold Bike (available in a limited edition of only 10) is hand built and features "every visible surface" plated in 24 carat gold and more than 600 Swarovski crystals accenting the frame. I wouldn't think it's intended for real use on the street (they also sell a gold-plated bike rack for display, if you're interested) but they do offer a 10 year "no questions asked" guarantee so maybe it is. Can't imagine chaining it a bike rack on the curb though. €80,000Via Luxurylaunchesv

IceLink Bicycle Chain Bracelets

Men who enjoy wearing bracelets have an incredible amount of options out there. Bracelets and other non-watch wrist wear are increasing in popularity and are suitable as something to wear on one's wrist opposite a watch, or even with a watch on the same wrist. Alternatively they can be worn on days you take a break from your watch, but you still want something there to keep your wrist from feeling naked. Watch and jewelry maker IceLink has a neat line of Bicycle Bracelets for men. While IceLink's timepiece collection is clearly priced in the luxury range, these bicycle chain styled bracelets are much more value priced. The brand offers a range of the bracelets in different styles, widths, and with various levels of decoration. Seen above are just two examples with an all stainless steel metal version and other with alternating black link segments. With a design directly inspired by bicycle chains, the line of bracelets is intentionally "gear minded." With the communicative power to suggest that its wearer is both active, and has an appreciation of well-made sports equipment such as a bike or motorcycle. Price is in the $175 range (give or take a bit). You can visit their website for a full catalog of the IceLink Bicycle Chain bracelet choices. Those apocalyptic wheelie poppers were based on Ducatis, but if you fancied the look of them, Italian bike builder CR&S has something pretty close.Called the DUU Concept, the hand-built naked ride is a combination of "a sporty European rolling chassis powered by a muscular American big-twin." The engine is a 1.9-liter (117 cu. in.) X-Wedge supplied by engine maker S&S. Wrapped around that powerplant is a chassis that CR&S says can be tailored by the customer. They don't specifically indicate the breadth of that customization beyond presenting the choice of single or two-seater versions, but any time you combine "Italian" and "hand-made," the options list usually runs long.CR&S said it has plans to build them from next year, at €20,000 ($30,000 U.S.) apiece. Once you take delivery, your first mission can be to hunt down McG and, well, you'll know what to do when the time comes...
